Our Story
Charlotte Amalie High School is a public high school on the
island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Prior to the 2017-18 school
year which saw the territory impacted severely by Hurricane Irma and Maria, Charlotte
Amalie had a student population of approximately 1400 students. In the aftermath
and the continued recovery, that number currently rest at approximately 1000
students. The school is named after the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands
(Charlotte Amalie). Charlotte Amalie High School is the larger of the two
public high schools in the St. Thomas / St. John District and serves the
largest secondary school student population in the territory.
Our History
Charlotte Amalie High School was organized as a junior high
school in 1920. In 1930 it added the first twelfth grade and four students
graduated in the class of 1931. An interesting note about the early years of
Charlotte Amalie High School is that last appointed and first elected governor
of the Virgin Islands Melvin H. Evans was a graduate of the Class of 1935 as
well as the Class Valedictorian and President. A veritable who’s who of
instructors worked at Charlotte Amalie High during this period including Jose
Antonio Jarvis, Bertha C. Boschulte, and Alton Adams Sr. Initially, the school
operated at the Commandant Gade Site before moving to the former Marine Barracks which is the present Senate Building. During the World War II era, the
school returned to the Commandant Gade site before eventually moving to the
then newly built Charlotte Amalie High School which opened at its current site
in 1955. Another interesting tidbit is, Sugar Estate Road colloquially referred to as"High School Stretch" was provided the designation of Alton Adams Sr. Drive leading to Charlotte Amalie High School having a physical address named in honor of the First Black Bandmaster of the United States Navy and former CAHS educator, Alton Adams.

O great and noble high school. How much we owe to thee.
Our grateful hearts will always live wherever we may be.
So let us shout with all our might, and let our joyance never cease.
God grant that teachers, friends, and school may ever have His peace.
We'll not forget the lessons our teachers taught each day.
We'll make you proud of us dear school, each pupil in his way
We'll strive to keep your standards high and fight with all our might
