Gardine School Kicks Off WOYC 2016 With A Bang

Culture bearer Asta Williams teaches Kg students how to appreciate color differences by reading the book “Colors Around Me” during WOYC kick-off activity at the Juanita Gardine School on April 11, 2016.

 

Juanita Gardine Elementary School kicked off Week of the Young Child (WOYC) Monday, April 11 with storytelling and music collaboration in steel pan.

Culture bearer Asta Williams came out to give kindergartners some highlights in V.I. History, like the transfer of the V.I. from Danish to U.S. in 1917 and to read the book “Colors Around Me” by Vivian Church and illustrated by Sherman Beck on the school’s ground.

Volunteer Emmanuella Perez-Cassius also came out to read to Gardine kindergarten students the book,“Where the Wild Things Are”--story and illustration by Maurice Sendak.

Later in the gym, 2nd grade students, donning masks they made in the classroom,  got to learn the art of steel band playing by upper-grade students in 4th – 5th grades.  This session was guided by Mr. Walters.

WYOC activities at Gardine are coordinated by 2nd grade teacher Sherna Concepcion, along with  2nd grade teachers Trinisia Jones and Shana Williams.
